Santa Ana, CA - Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen has been endorsed by the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) in the race for California’s 46th Congressional district.  While PDA is known for electing true progressives and fighting corporate influence in politics, it is also credited as being a large part of the stunning electoral victories for Democrats in 2006 and 2008.

National PDA Executive Director Donna Smith said the following in support of Bao:

Bao Nguyen is a progressive in every way. He embodies the principles of our movement and our vision to have an elected progressive majority in Congress. Bao is a champion for healthcare, education, and the environment, and he stands firmly against unnecessary and costly wars. We in the progressive movement know that if there is no justice, there will be no peace. Bao Nguyen is exactly the kind of Democrat who will help bring about that justice and that peace, and we’re proud to endorse him.

Mayor Nguyen responded with gratitude, and expressed his conviction to change how Washington works:

Big money and corporate influence have no place in shaping our public policies on education and the environment. Washington is broken, and the people of Orange County will not be bought. I’m glad to have PDA’s support in the fight for progressive policies that lift middle and working class families, not just the top 1%.

Born in a UN refugee camp, Bao was carried to the United States by his parents to escape oppression in Vietnam. He grew up in the 46th district, attended Garden Grove public schools, and graduated from Pacifica High School.

Bao was elected Mayor of Garden Grove in 2014, where he has increased government transparency and fought corruption. Upon his swearing-in, he became the first directly- elected Vietnamese American Democratic Mayor in the United States. He is the city’s first Vietnamese American and first Openly LGBTQ Mayor. Prior to his historic election, he served as member of the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education.
